17 May 2023: Jean Jones — Quilting Tips, Tricks, Tools and Hacks

Jean Jones, Sophisticat Studio
There is something for every quilter, brand new or seasoned, in this collection of tips and tricks gathered over 30 years of quilting and 15 years of teaching. This is a “show and tell” presentation, including demonstrations and quilt samples, and welcoming questions and contributions from the audience.
Jean cannot remember a time when she was not doing some kind of needlecraft, learning to knit and embroider and hand sew even as a preschooler. She first fell in love with quilting when she started a part-time job in a fabric store, and 30 years later has not looked back. Jean loves designing and teaching, and now she is passing on her love of quilting to her grandchildren.

Below is the link to the recording of the presentation. It is available until midnight on June 19, 2023.
19 April 2023: Dana E. Jones: Pagtinabangay — The Quilts & Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island
Dana E. Jones, artist, quiltmaker and journalist, is author of Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island, which shares the story of quiltmaking on a 13-acre island in the central Philippines.
You’ll be transported to a tiny island — just 13 acres — in the central Philippines as you enjoy images and stories of the colorful quilts and the more than 100 quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. You’ll see photos of more than 50 of these handmade, one-of-a-kind quilts plus be introduced to the unique techniques developed by these quiltmakers whose tools are simply fabric and scissors, needle and thread. I spent more than a month on the island, quilted with the residents, went fabric shopping with them on nearby Cebu Island, and snorkeled the reef that surrounds Caohagan. Those who view the quilts come away smiling, inspired by the creativity of these women and men.

Dana is a former editor of Quilters Newsletter magazine and the Studio Art Quilt Associates Journal. She has had articles and/or pattern and block designs published in these magazines as well as in The Quilt Life, Fons and Porter’s Love of Quilting, McCall’s Quilting, Quiltmaker, Quilts With Style and Quick Quilts.
She spoke and taught at the 2022 International Quilt Festival in Houston and American Quilter’s Society 2022 Daytona Beach, Florida, and Grand Rapids, Michigan shows. She is a regular teacher at Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and quilt shops across Colorado, and has spoken and taught at quilt guilds and shops in Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Washington and Kansas.
Dana offers open enrollment classes via Zoom. The most popular are “Demystifying Design for Foundation Paper Piecing” and “Peace Cranes Over Hiroshima.”
Her quilts have been exhibited at Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and as part of the 2018 American Quilt Study Group traveling exhibition.
She lives at 9,200 feet in the Rocky Mountains in Gilpin County, Colorado, northwest of Denver.

15 March 2023: Elizabeth DeCroos “Korean Pujagi meets Canada”
Elizabeth started sewing as a child, and has always been interested in a variety of needlecrafts. In 2009, she took her young family to South Korea, where she had the opportunity to learn pojagi – a traditional Korean art form that goes back thousands of years.
Upon returning to Canada, Elizabeth developed techniques for similar patchwork using a sewing machine and materials more readily available in the west. Her batik window hangings look like stained glass in the sun.
She works with this technique in her home base – Epida Studio. Her pattern line is called Epida Designs and she publishes pojagi patterns as well as traditional quilting and embroidery patterns. She teaches live workshops both in person and virtually and has on-demand courses.
You can see tutorials and inspiration at epidastudio.com.

15 February 2023: Terry Aske – My Evolution as an Art Quilter
Terry Aske is a textile artist, who creates her art with fabric, thread and a sewing machine. Primarily self-taught, Terry designs and creates contemporary quilts in her home studio in New Westminster, BC, Canada.
Terry’s art quilts have been juried into many national and international shows and exhibits, and published in well known magazines. Terry has won awards in both the artistic and modern categories.
———————————
There is something wonderful about working with fabric – it is soft and flexible, and has both tactile and visual texture. Fabric provides shape and color to my work. Layering and quilting add texture and dimension.
My style is contemporary, and I create both realistic and abstract images. I use a variety of techniques, including machine-piecing, fusible appliqué, thread-sketching and free-motion-quilting. I delight in using commercial prints – such as plaids and florals – in unexpected ways. From a distance, viewers observe colors, shapes and values. As one draws nearer to the quilt, the prints add visual texture and interest.
I create art as a means of self-expression, but also as a way to connect and communicate with others. I enjoy exhibiting my work, and it makes me happy when viewers experience an emotional response to my work – even if it is not the response I intended!

June 15, 2022: AGM, Prairie Rose Challenge Show and Guest Speaker

For June, our speaker is Yvonne Bilan-Wallace: “Finding Creativity – Adventures Picking Weeds during Isolation”.
Our June meeting is also the AGM (Annual General Meeting), and a presentation of the annual members’ challenge, the Prairie Rose Challenge Show!
The annual challenge is hosted by our past chair and this year the theme was “The Beauty of Diversity”. While some members are excited to get involved, many feel that these challenges are well beyond their “comfort zone”.
Yvonne Bilan-Wallace is a supportive and encouraging guild member who regularly helps members try different techniques outside of their “comfort” zone. Her positive support led many of the “Coffee Bee” members to participate in the creation of a self-portrait “faces” project. These faces were combined in a quilt that was presented to Myrna Purser, in gratitude for her leadership of the “Coffee Bee”. Yvonne has shared her learnings from classes she has taken through a presentation to the “Coffee Bee” during the past year as well.
Yvonne is excited to present to all the guild members her expanded story of creative adventures picking weeds during isolation.
Many members will be inspired and encouraged to consider participating in the Prairie Rose Quilt Challenge in the future after hearing Yvonne’s presentation.
