Welcome to our innovative and exciting 2021-2022 Program year!

June 16, 2021: AGM and Prairie Rose Scavenger Hunt Show

June’s meeting has no formal speaker as it is the AGM (Annual General Meeting), but there will be a presentation of the annual members’ challenge, the Prairie Rose Scavenger Hunt Show!
The annual challenge is hosted by our past chair and this year the theme was “All About You”.  It was a bit of a mystery quilt as well.  Members were given clues throughout the year that added elements to their challenge quilt.
Come see all the amazing interpretations of our challenge.
The winners of the Guild Grants will also be announced.

September 15, 2021: “Behind the Seams” with Peter Byrne

Hello folks, you are invited to my virtual Trunk Show called “Behind the Seams” with Peter Byrne; please allow me to introduce myself and give you some of the highlights!

My name is Peter Byrne. I am a national and international award-winning, published modern quilter, designer and teacher with a deep passion for innovation and design.  While attending QuiltCon 2020, my quilt titled ‘Starring You’ won Best in Show and my quilt titled ‘Cityscape”won Best Machine Quilting Frameless.

I’m presently offering a presentation that includes over 350 slides, taking viewers through my own personal quilting journey.  In total, I share 20 quilts and going virtual has allowed me to include “how to” pictures of my quilt making process, along with close ups of every quilt!  We start by having a look at my experience of winning “Best in Show” and “Best Machine Quilting Frameless” at QuiltCon 2020.

I welcome everyone in, to have a look at my sewing studio and then we go all the way back to 2009 and view the first two quilts I made.

We move forward to 2017, when I became a full time student of the craft and joined the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild to further my quilting experience.  I walk you through my quilts made in 2017 and 2018 as I practised and developed my quilting skills, followed by sharing the spotlight at Quilts at the Creek!  I share a new approach to raw edge appliqué I have developed called Hover-quilting.

We then have a close look at my quilts made in 2019, when I decided to start making quilts specifically for juried shows and finish the show with all of my current work from 2020 and 2021.

This is a fast paced 45 minute presentation, followed by a Q & A. I look forward to meeting you and answering all of your questions!

20 October 2021 -- Hobbs Batting with Stephanie Hackney

Hobbs Bonded Fibers made a bold commitment to enter the quilt batting market in 1978. They have worked diligently to be the highest quality provider and leader in product development in the industry. At Hobbs Batting, they never forget that quilts are a gift from the heart – an expression of love, commitment, and caring for a specific recipient – or an expression of artistry and skill – artistry and skill that’s submitted and judged in quilt shows and events around the world – or both

Stephanie Hackney, Director: Sales & Marketing of Craft & Retail Products from Hobbs Bonded Fibers will cover such topics as how to choose the right batting content for your quilt, pros and (potential) cons of the various fiber types, recommended batting types for specific projects (art quilts, charity quilts, show quilts, bed quilts, etc.), the proper care and use of batting/quilts, and tips and tricks for best results. Stephanie is responsible for all marketing activities centered around the Hobbs Batting Brand, including educating quilters and other creative uses of the products Hobbs manufactures.

Stephanie has shared her batting expertise through in-person lectures at most major quilt industry events, including Quilt Market, and she continues to share this knowledge virtually.

It’s sure to be a batting education!!”

17 November 2021 -- "Call of the Heartwood: My Creative Journey With Trees" with Lorraine Roy

Textile Artist Lorraine Roy will present her artistic journey in words and pictures as she describes how trees wove their way into her art and her heart. Lorraine will describe the variety of non-traditional fabric and thread techniques that have evolved over her 30 year career, and will present a trunk show and slides of her current work. This event will appeal to artists of all stripes, environmentalists, gardeners, and anyone who exalts in the presence of trees.

Raised in Rural Southern Ontario, Lorraine Roy completed an Honours BSc in Horticultural Sciences before opting for a professional career in art textiles. Kindled by an early love of hand-embroidery, she eventually learned to ‘paint’ with fabric using her sewing machine. All her work explores connections between art, science and nature, and most of her imagery is inspired by biology, mythology and cultural impact of trees, classical symbols of our connection with the natural world. She continues to acquire new knowledge and insights about them, in order to better address and convey our mutual rich and complex kinship.

December Meeting Photo Contest Presentation

19 January 2022 -- Val Wilson "Uncovering Art Quilts".

An engaging account by Valerie Wilson of her journey from traditional quilts to her current adventures in art quilting.  Valerie will show a variety of quilts representing that journey, including close-up views and progress shots of her quilts.

A love of fabric and quilts began the moment Valerie Wilson curled up beneath one of her grandmother’s quilts as a child. Wilson has worked with fabrics from childhood, learning embroidery from her grandmother and garment sewing from her mother. She started out with traditional quilting but soon decided that what she really yearned to do was create pictures from fabric. In 2002, Wilson started quilting and in 2014, fibre art became her full-time occupation.

Having been the owner of an architectural antique business, Valerie maintains a keen interest in old houses and the people who lived in them. This is evident in Valerie’s current series; vintage portraits based on those brilliant old photos depicting the way we once were. Valerie combines a love of history and a curiosity about people from the past, to capture character in fabric.

Valerie’s award-winning work has been exhibited from British Columbia to St. John’s, Newfoundland in Canada, and internationally from New Zealand to Houston, Texas. Valerie became the Fibre Art Network (FAN) Membership Co-ordinator in 2004 when she joined this co-operative of professional, Western Canadian fibre artists. And in 2016 a Juried Artist Member of Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA).

16 February 2022 -- Janet Mireault: "Jumpstarting Your Creativity" with Katie PM

Our education grant recipient has loved quilting ever since she was a very little girl. One of her favourite past times was to lay under her mother’s large quilting frame and watch the stitches form as the needles went up and down. Her mother and grandmother both did quilting, painting, embroidery, cross-stitch, crochet, weaving, knitting and sewing.

Her quilting journey began in 1985 when she was a stay home mom with two young toddlers. Her first quilts were made using cardboard templates and scissors and then hand-quilted with pearl cotton just as her mother did.  She still loves traditional quilting but had always dreamt of doing the Fibre Art techniques.  In 2015, she took a few years off work and decided to try it all.  She took every possible workshop she could that had anything to do with Fibre Arts and new techniques in quilting.

She belongs to two quilting guilds, one of which she was a founding member, a needlecraft guild and a small fibre art group that she started four years ago. She loves sharing her passion with others and has always participated in showing techniques at Creative Stitches and The Works. She enters a piece every year in the EDQG Prairie Rose Show and has entered many of her original quilts and wall hangings in guild and fibre art shows.

Join John of Art East Quilting Co. as he shares his journey in sewing that eventually led to a career in quilt patterns and pet portraiture. This presentation will be a lecture/trunk show hybrid full of quirky creatures and modern magic!

John was born in Windsor, ON and has been a crafter and maker for as long as he can remember. It was his love of theatre and costume that eventually led to his peaked interest in sewing and textiles. John received his BA with Honours at Dalhousie University, NS, and it was here he discovered his love for historical costuming, modern pattern drafting, and unconventional sewing techniques.

John discovered his passion for everything quilts almost by accident, while searching for a project to occupy his down time. This quickly became his career focus! He started Art East Quilting Co. under which he publishes modern quilt patterns and offers custom quilts, fabric goods and art pieces. John enjoys spreading his love of quilting worldwide through his various virtual workshops which range from traditional quilting techniques, modern unconventional thread application and quirky raw-edge applique pet portraits.

20 April 2022 -- Shelly Bortolotto: Organizing Your Sewing Room

Shelly’s presentation “How to Create The Ultimate Sewing Room” provides a new approach on organizing your sewing room. She teaches how your thoughts about your sewing room create your results. Either you are motivated to get tidying, or not. Combine this with setting your stash motto, creating a vision and some practical suggestions, and you will leave full of pep to get organizing.

Shelly’s enthusiasm for organizing your sewing room is contagious. She explores a whole new way to make progress in your sewing room – by managing your thoughts. Her 28 day challenge to organize your sewing room was born out of a realization that quilters needed help with this. By going day by day, focusing on one bit at a time, and keeping your thoughts in check, she shows it can be done.
